Wouldn’t it be nice to have a protective coat of ice? You can have a protective coat of fire, so why not a protective coat of ice? Now, my reasoning on this works best if there is a system of ‘elemental opposites’, but here it is:

I just went hunting in the Volum Forest Clearing, and am up against several Firewolves. These creatures have a ‘fire’ elementalism, and if ‘fire’ and ‘frost’ are elemental opposites (which makes sense when compared to the real world, but not necessarily when compared to the skills list), then they would be weak to frost attacks – and defenses. So while a firecoat of 1 would deal a firewolf 1 damage, an icecoat of 1 would deal it 2 (or possibly more, depending on the weakness adjustment formula used). A cold hard frost does at least as much damage as a comparably hot fire, and while it is easier (in the real world) to maintain a fire than to keep something frozen, the use of magic negates that difference, making the existence of an ‘icecoat’ seem logical given the existence of a ‘firecoat’.

Another Frost ability I just thought of:
‘Freeze’: encase target in block of ice for x turns, slowing target down by a factor of y. ‘X’ can be constant and predetermined if you like, but the force of the attack is ‘y’. This would basically be a long-range ‘grapple’, and if I were to implement it I would restrict the ability to higher-level frost weapons (definitely exclude ‘primitive frostcoil’, and probably ‘basic frost cylinder’ as well – assuming there are better weapons than basic cylinders, which I have yet to find: they certainly aren’t common in Hopitan!).

Just a few thoughts to keep everyone busy. Any comments, people?

Why have all the elements do the same thing? You need to have different effects for all elements, and few enough elements to use strategically in a party.
