This event is definitely harder than anything ever seen on this game. I’ve had to flee two battles now, and half the time at least one of my characters die. Is there a place where I can train my stats in this event that is the easiest?

Actually, yes and no. The multitude of skill trees used for this event makes efficient training very hard, since only very few of the enemies use the same skill leaf. (They use the same tree (Festival) and the same branch (Pioneers Week), but many of them have own leaves (Spirit of…))
WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!
To train for Plateney, you can visit Volum Forest. Both “Native” event NPC types use the same skill tree – Spirit of Tradition. Be aware, though, that you can also encounter the Conquerors in Plateney, and they have no low-level counterpart.
To train for Tiasa, you can go to Hopitan (Old Townhall) – the Settlers you can encounter there have the same skill leaf as the Tiasa settlers (Spirit of Resilience). Be aware though, that they may be accompanied by Ranchers and Farmers in Tiasa, which use Spirit of Nurturance instead.
It’s a little bit harder for Chaduk and Martis. In the areas outside of towns, you will only find Assessors (Martis, Spirit of Venture) or Explorers (Chaduk, Spirit of Adventure), without the Pioneers. In towns, you will face the Explorers/Adventurers together with Pioneers, so if you want to train, it’d be best to defeat some roamers on the road of either Chaduk OR Martis, then go to the respective town, defeat some people in that arena, and then go to the other town, train there, before going on the road if necessary.
(Example: Fight in Martuso Mountains, train “Spirit of Venture”,
fight in Martis itself, using “Spirit of Venture” defense, train “Spirit of Resourcefulness”,
fight in Chaduk Haven, using “Spirit of Resourcefulness” defense, train “Spirit of Adventure”)
The mission foes use completely different skill trees, so don’t worry about them.
And another hint: Some of the foes have very strong AoE attacks (Conqueror Boss for example) – and some of them require special conditions that are – somewhat – revealed in the descriptions when they use them.
(Example: Absolute Conquest – “oh, what formidable defenses” – will only trigger if the Defense of one of your characters exceeds a certain limit.)

I just found something out actually…
SEMI-SPOILERS AHEAD!
I noticed that either I can’t move my melee character(s) sometimes, or I don’t want to attack them because of fire coat/fire ward…so, what I found out to be a good way to defeat them the best is use full on AoE damaging attacks such as : Brushfire, Ice Storm, and Lava. They kill them quick, and you don’t have to worry about life loss with fire coat/fire ward. And, if you can’t move but they are like 3-5 spaces away, you might be able to still pull of the damaging AoE attack on them. Also, if one guy has Tornado, it usually comes in handy for 1-2 enemies, but some will just regenerate their Defense quickly.

Bah. This kinda works against Conquerers…but they are still too tough.

SPOILER!!!
And that Ancient Colonists Hat is tough to get. I’ve probably fought like 10-15 Settlers in the Tiasa townhall…no accessory yet.

one option to beat the conquerer’s gang is to fight them with their own weapons, try to boost your counter attacks as high as possible an they will just run into their final destination ;-)

i killed them using my standard strategy.
Heavy Boots them to a standstill and then either snipe with ranged attacks or move in, attack, move out.
They do a lot less damage when they can’t close with you to melee range.

Hmm…I’ve tried heavy boots on others, it doesn’t work. Maybe it does on them, then?
